The skin barrier: what is it and how do I know when it's damaged?

The skin barrier is the term used to describe the top layer of the skin. The skin barrier has two main roles: it helps to retain moisture by preventing transepidermal water loss, and it also protects the skin from threatening environmental factors. It protects against environmental pollution and harmful chemicals as well as the sun's ultraviolet rays.

Signs that your skin barrier may be compromised Skin barrier disorders can manifest themselves in many different ways, but the following are some of the most common factors that can help you assess whether your skin barrier is compromised.

Signs that the skin barrier is damaged:

  • Redness of the skin
  • Irritation of the skin
  • Itching of the skin
  • Dehydrated, enlarged skin
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Skin infections
  • Prolonged healing of wounds
  • Exacerbation of rosacea and eczema

What could be damaging the skin barrier? There are many different factors that affect the functioning of the skin barrier, but here are the main ones that can lead to a breach in your skin barrier:

Stress Lack of sleep Poor, unbalanced diet Smoking Pollution Weather conditions Harmful sunlight Too many harsh products Too frequent use of acidic products Too frequent use of harsh physical exfoliants How to restore a healthy skin barrier? A simple first step is to simplify your skin care routine. When the skin barrier is compromised, using more skincare products is definitely not better. The most important thing now is to restore and strengthen the skin barrier, so choose only the essentials, such as cleanser, toner, face cream and sunscreen.

Skip the exfoliation step until your skin feels extremely irritated, red, etc. Instead, opt for a soothing or moisturising serum and a hydrating/nourishing face mask. For more severe inflammation, such as rosacea or eczema, consult a dermatologist. Once the underlying skin condition has improved and the skin barrier has been strengthened, you will be able to continue to enjoy a full facial skin care routine.

Last but not least, study the ingredients of your skincare products very carefully.

Choose products that are suitable for your skin type, avoid very harsh products, strong acids and alcohol. Look out for ingredients such as ceramides, hyaluronic acid, glycerine, panthenol, petrolatum, niacinamide, squalane, which will help to repair and strengthen the skin barrier more quickly.

And finally, take care of yourself from the inside: try to reduce stress, eat healthier and get a good night's sleep. Drink more water and take food supplements if needed.

Remember - the skin barrier is a valuable friend that protects you from various environmental threats.
